The setup before was someone using a client sender on a windows machine to
send out bulk sends to my linux sendmail box with dkim on it. I switched it
to go from the app on the windows machine to a linux sendmail server which
relayed to the server with dkim on it. The dkim verified just fine and it
went through rather quickly from his side. It still took time to add the
dkim signature but at that point his app wasn't waiting for a response so it
could proceed onto the next message.
