I've changed its type to uint32_t, and added this text to the
documentation:

+The version is encoded as a four-octet integer, with the octets
+representing (from highest-order to lowest-order) the release number,
+the major version number, the minor version number, and the patch level.

The next scheduled release is set for early June, and will be 2.4.0. If
any major bug reports come in or a sufficient mass of minor ones, there
could be a 2.3.3 in the interim.
