Here's what I wrote in the commit log:
revision 1.1.2.1
date: 2009/11/11 23:26:30; author: grooverdan; state: Exp; lines: +23 -0
add m4 subdirectory. should enable full libtool capabilites (i.e. symbol
hiding) on all platforms. The m4/* files are generated by libtoolize however
put here because they are a modern version and can be used when the OS version
does not exist or uses an old broken copy. Please only replace m4/* if you
have a newer version.

If this isn't true in some way I'm happy for their removal or some change to
occur.
